Condition: Very Good, Jacket: Very Good, Lord Nelson, was the most celebrated admiral in British history. Born on Sept. 29, 1758, he entered (1770) the Royal Navy at the age of 12 and was a captain by 1778. Nelson already a National Hero for the victory of Trafalgar, and deep in the middle of a scandalous love affair with Lady Hamilton was sent to Copenhagen. In a battle equal to the Trafalgar victory Nelson was sent to attach a fleet lying at anchor in a heavily protected harbor under the guns of a formaidable fortress, hampered further by the interference of an aging hesitant commander in chief whose incompetence and timidity almost cost Nelson and England the victory. Nelson put a telescope to his blind eye--he had been blinded in battle in 1794 and had also lost his right arm in 1797--to avoid seeing a signal from his commander, Sir Hyde Parker, that would have prevented him from crippling the Danish fleet. A baron since his triumph at the Nile, Nelson now received a viscountcy. Profusely illustrated with 4 maps, and 33 illustrations. Brown cloth boards and spine.
