Friedenthal, Richard; Translated By Daphne Woodward. Letters of the Great Artists from ( William ) Blake to Pollock from Ghiberti to Gainsborough, Volumes I & II New York, Random House, 1963, Slipcase, Condition: Fine, Fascinating insight into the most personal viewpoints of these great artists. Volume one begins with the Early and High Renaissance, from Ghiberti to Durer; Late Renaissance, Michelangelo to Niclaus Manuel Deutsch; 17th Century, Lodovico Carracci to Sir John Vanbrugh; 18th Century, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo to Gainsborough, 159 plates, 51 in color. As communications spread further and further artist began to exchange drawings with one and other. The letters reflect the dependence of the artist on "the patron," the employer, whether this was a prince or a religious community. How art grew into a business. Volume II covers the 19th through 20th centuries: Blake to Constable; Ingres to Manet; Kandinsky to Pollock. In this volume the chief stress has been laid on the artists' personal utterances, in an attempt to bring out the highly important influence of experiences they went through in life.
