My Ten Years In A Quandry, And How They Grew
New York, Blue Ribbon Books,
1940, Hard Cover,
illus: Gluayas Williams, Condition: Very Good, Jacket: Good Plus, Robert Benchley; 1889- 1945: Member of New York's famous literary Algonquin Round Table, he contributed humorous pieces to Vanity Fair, was a reporter for the New York Tribune, and shared an office with Dorothy Parker as a freelance writer. He began at The New Yorker in 1925 and was the drama critic from 1929-1940. In this volume Mr. Benchley offers practical and indispensable information on: how to treat people who greet you on the telephone with "one moment please"; what to do with publicity notes on authors (Mr. B. suggests they go awfully well with peanut butter); how to find a locomotive you have mislaid. Then there's a testy correspondence between Mr. B. and schoolteacher who maintains there is such a place as Budapest. Mr. B. seems to think Budapest was was eliminated in 1802 because the coffee was getting bad. Many hilarious people turn up too: a penguin called Eddie. Benchley's supreme wit and off beat sense of humor wind up with five sizzling chapters of his Unfinished Life story, from the innocent young man who arrived in New York looking for pitfalls only to find that it was a holiday and they were all closed for that day! Red cloth boards and spine. DJ flap edges squared, 100 to upper flap ($1.00). Yellow pictiorial with red lettering, upper and lower edges (front and rear) have 2 inch thin remnants of tape, f.e.p. stains from tape to edges. Few chips to spine ends. Cartoon illustrated. All else clean, tightly bound. 361 pp, sm 8vo
