Lewton, Val. No Bed of Her Own New York, Triangle Books, 1948, Hard Cover, Condition: Very Good, Early novel of Val Lewton before his successful horror film career. Young girl from a small town (during the depression) decides to move to N.Y.C. A strange, exciting story of a woman's desire for love and security at a time when there is no money to try to build either. Originally published in 1932; according to Joel Siegel's The Reality of Terror, this book was so succesful it was translated & published in 12 countries. Colorful picture boards, of girl in a racey bohemian type outfit, mild spotting, few closed tears to upper spine end, rubbing of spine ends and edges, foredges red stained, mild toning to text. First page small closed edge tear. All else clean, tightly bound. Lang, George. Nobody knows the Truffles I've Seen New York, Alfred A Knopf, 1998, First Edition ed, Hard Cover, Condition: Fine, Jacket: Near Fine, Signed by Author Fine Dining legend George Lang, tells his fascinating story of his rise to the world's most distinguished and successful restaurateurs; selected by Nations Restaurant News as Fine Dining Legend award winner of 1999. With splashes of "comedie noir," he relives the horrors of the Nazi take over in his native Hungary and his escape to freedom. From his metamorphosis of budding violinist to top strategist in the palate revolution that swept across America during the postwar years. After landing in New York in 1946 his he did a stint on the Arthur Godfrey show, and a fill-in for Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe, before the kitchen opened up a whole new world for him. Soon Lang was managing a "wedding factory" on the Bowery, and then orchestrating banquets at the Waldorf for Khrushchev, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Grace and the like. In the 1960s he worked for Restaurant Associates alongside friend, Joe Baum, traveling around the world, designing restaurants and exploring exotic cuisines. He supervised the company's restaurants at the New York World's Fair in 1964 and was as director of The Four Season's restaurant in New York City in 1967. In 1975 he resurrected two great landmarks, Cafe des Artistes and Gundel in his native Hungary. Lang's book brings back the world of the Budapest coffeehouses, where life was one long string of paprika-flavored punch lines. With 42 photographs and 5 drawings. Ecksetin, Gustav. Noguchi New York, Harper & Bros, 1931, First Edition ed, Hard Cover, Condition: Very Good Plus, Hideyo Noguchi (1876-1928), born and educated in Japan, gained great fame as a scientist in America, where he joined The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (1904-1928). After early research on snake venoms, Noguchi became the first scientist to demonstrate that paralysis resulted from syphilis; was the first to grow pure cultures of spirochetes; and made significant contributions toward the understanding of Carrion's disease. He also developed a vaccine for Yellow Fever. He died of yellow fever in Accra, Ghana, where he had been studying that disease. His writings include Action of Snake Venom upon Cold-Blooded Animals (1904) and Laboratory Diagnosis of Syphilis (rev. ed. 1923). An indepth biography of Noguchi's beginnings in Japan, immigrations to America, scientific discoveries, private life, and Japan early late 19th early 20th Centuries.
