Augustus Mitchell & Gustav Remak, Esq., published 1846 Thomas Cowperthwait & Co., Philadelphia. First Edition. A comprehensive general History of the World: Cities; empires; architecture; nature; botany; historic monuments; races; wildlife; wildgame; plant life identification; ancient civilizations; cultures; oceans; geography, etc. with over 1200 illustrations from engravings of the same. Covering: America; Germany; Spain; Italy; Africa; Middle East; Columbia; Persia, etc. The world in 1846. The Mitchell family were well known map makers for 60 years, producing many of the finest maps of North America. S. Augustus Mitchell (the son), 1792-1868 Bristol, Connecticut. Resided in Philadelphia as a school teacher and well known Geographer. His 24 geographies, atlases and maps were widely sold. He also published " General View of the World, Physical, Political, and Statistical" (Philadelphia, 1846), and " New Travellers' Guide through the United States" (1850), as well as an edition of John James Audubon's "Birds of America." This German language volume I believe to be a very rare variant of his usual English publishings. Ornate brown pressed leather, considerably rubbed & scuffed, corners rubbed & bumped, black title panel to spine gilt lettering. Blue marbled end papers. Front e.p. & f.e.p. missing. Volume begins at title page. Pages mildly toned, with random mild foxing. Very legible & clean for age. Mitchell Few pages have mild creasing, text readable. Hinges weak, however binding is firm. A very rare & well preserved book. In protective polyester wraps. sm 4 to, 904 pages.
