London, Jack. The People of the Abyss New York, Grosset & Dunlap, 1907, Hardcover, Condition: Very Good, Jack London's graphic detail of the East End of London, early 1900's. He spent 86 days gathering information and photographys. Swapped his clothes for a used outfit that would be in keeping with his new identity of a stranded American sailor and merged into the life of the East Enders, venturing into Frying Pan Alley. He discovered people who lived in the slums did so not by choice and not through laziness, but because of old age, disease, or accidents that had reduced their labor value. Escape from the slums was next to impossible, for their tiny wages did not permit them to live elsewhere. They had no resources, no money, and no strength left. Slow starvation was the common end. Reprint May 1907. Ove 70 illustrations, many photos taken by London. Ending poem "The Challenge" by Longfellow; followed by ads. Red cloth boards and spine, blind stamped decoration to edges.Spine mildly darkened, ends bumped, frayed to corners. Clean text, solidly bound. 12 mo. 319 pages (London, Turn, Of, The Century, East, End, Of, London, 1900, S, Workhouses, In England, Whitchapel, District, London, Jack, London, American, Authors, American, Literature, London, East, Enders) Cat No. 2151. 24.50
