Canton Bruce.
Terrible Swift Sword, Volume II, The Centennial History of the Civil War
New York, Doubleday & Company,
1963, First Edition ed, Hard Cover,
Condition: Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus, Canton's compendium of the Civil War, in volume II he describes how the war slowly but steadily got out of control. Not the neat, short "limited" war both sides expected. Canton reveals how the sweeping force of all out conflict changed the war's purpose, from a war to stop slavery, to a war for human freedom. Reflecting the earliest engagements, which were halting and inconclusive; how reputations began to crumble. Showing General McClellan's arrogance (in his own letters), accepting serious overestimates of the Conferate strength, and becoming fatally estranged from his own government. Grant proves to be a fighter; Stonewal Jackson moves his tough troops with devastating speed; Lee unimpressive at first, begins to take charge, bodly, while Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln, in strangely similar situations, feel out the role of President, Commander-in-Chief, and the limits of the war itself. A book of clashing action and details of astonishing scope. The terrible, swift swords which caused rivers to run red, man and women to cry out. As it moves from the early epsiodes to the vicious battle at Antietam; from Farragut's superbly executed rush on New Orleans to an examination of the astonishing trade between enemies. The war that moved the American people beyond the Emancipation of one race, to the freedom of all people. Grey cloth boards, red cloth spine. DJ not price clipped, pictorial, mild edgewear. Map endpapers. Section of maps. Clean no markings, solidly bound. First Edition. sm 4to, 559 pp
(Civil, War, Bruce, Canton, Terrible, Swift, Sword, Confederate, Army, Union, Army) Cat No. 2299.
