Gross, Theodore L. The Literature of American Jews; Foreward By Elie Wiesel New York, The Free Press, 1973, First Edition ed, Hard Cover, Condition: Fine/Very Good, Drawing on fiction, poetry, drama, and critical essays, The Literature of American Jews is a testimony to the rich literary expression of Jewish Americans. Professor Gross traces the social, economic, and moral roots of Jewish literature. Forty authors are reprented, such as: Clifford Odets, Delmore Schwartz, Muriel Rukeyser, Karl Shapiro, Bernand Malamud, Arthur Miller, Grace Paley, Ivan Fause, Daniel Fuchs, Allen Ginsberg, Howard Nemero, Isaac and others. Although their degree of Jewishness varies, each writer's sense of Jewish community has sharpened his awarness of himself in American society and caused him to bringg a special angle of vision to bear on the American experience. Part I depicts the hope and idealism of the early Jewish immigrants as well as the religious fervor and political radicalism that characterised their lives in the years around the turn of the century. Part II includes selections reprentative of the period between two world wars; which marked the rapid economic and social development for American Jewry. A remarkable feature in the literature between the two wars is the lack of ethnic flavor, as the children of immigrants were engulfed in the early 20th century efforts to create a melting pot. Nevertheless writers like Michael Gold, Henry Roth, and Daniel Fuchs recall the immigrant experience in their writing. Part II brings together important works which bring together over 30 years of intense creative effort. There is also a section on essays of literary and cultural critics suh as Lionel Trilling, Irving Howe, Alfred Kazin, Leslie Fiedler, Nathan Glazer, Daniel Bell, and Norman Podhoretz. Elie Wiesel wrote the forward. A most compelling representation of the development of Jewish creative expression. Three quarter beige linen boards, quarter light brown linen spine. DW not price clipped. Brown illustrated, mild bumping and rubbing of edges and spine ends, few tiny closed tears. First Edition. Very clean white text, no writing, solidly bound. 510 pp, sm 4to In protective mylar cover.
