Josephson, Hannah. The Golden Threads, New England's Mill Girls and Magnates New York, Duell Sloan And Pearce, 1949, First Edition ed, Hard Cover, Condition: Very Good/Very Good, America's industrial age, between 1822 and 1850; when women from 17 to 22, came from the farms and villages of New England to work in the cotton mills established by the Boston Textile Industry. At the time the Lowell cotton mills were started the caste of the factory girl was the lowest among the employments of women; however, these girls were intelligent, energetic, attractive, and outside of working hours their social life was centered in churches; many of them mastered foreign languages, while others wrote verse or fiction, learned how to play piano, or took instruction in the fine arts. Two literary magazines were founded by them; distinguished visitors, from Andrew Jackson and Davy Crockett to Harriet Martineau and Charles Dickens, came to marvel at their idyllic existence in an industrial age. This way of life continued for 20 years until the demand of progress slowly changed and destroyed the patttern. Living standards fell, production increased, wages did not, the supervised homes of the girls fell into dreary overcrowded dormitories. Finally the girls were replaced by docile immigrant labor. Tan cloth boards and spine, DW not price clipped, yellow and grey. Mild edgewear, short closed tears to upper spine edge and one to lower spine edge. Mild rubbing. Lower edge to front inside flap chipped. All else, clean, tightly bound, no writing. First Edition, "I" to copywright page (Textile, Mills, Lowell, Massachusetts, Female, Factory, Workers, Massachusetts, Textile, Mills, Lowell, Cotton, Mills, Women, In Cotton, Mills, Millgirls, Social, History, American, Economic, History, 19th, Century, Early, Factory, Labor, In New, England, Women, In Factory, Labor, The Golden, Threads, First, Edition, Hannah, Josephson, Women, S, Studies, America, S, Cotton, Mills, Women, And Labor, American, Industrial, Age) Cat No. 2696. 22.50
