Truman, Harry S.
Memoirs of Harry S. Truman, Two Volumes
New York, Doubleday & Company,
1955, Hard Cover,
Condition: Very Good/Good Plus, Two volume set " Year of Decisions," and "Years of Trial and Hope". Truman's first year in office was a year of decisions, which were some of the most crucial decisions in history, two were Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Japanese surrender quickly followed and ended the war. In June 1945 Truman witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations. Important foreign policy initiatives marked Truman's Presidency. A central focus was to prevent the expansion of the influence of the Soviet Union. The Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan and North Atlantic treaty were all designe to provide military aid to countries resisting communist insurgencies; revive economies of European Nations, fighting communism with prosperity; and building a military barrier confronting the Soviet-dominated part of Europe. When North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950, Truman responded by waging undeclared war (a communist nation invaded a non-communist one). Domestically he presented to Congress a 21-point program, proposing the expansion of Social Security, a full-employment program, a permanent Fair Employment Practices Act, and public housing and slum clearance ("The Fair Deal"). Black cloth boards and spine, blue title panels to spine. Illustrated end papers. DW not clipped in polyester film cover, white balck and blue lettering, chips and closed tears to edges and spine ends, mild soil, volume one pale damp stain to spine and lower page end.
