Frontispiece of vol. I, engraving of a young William Penn, painted from life in 1666, by John Sartain, vol. II, Penn's Treaty with the Indians, both tissue covered. Watson finished the manuscript for this book in 1842, the information contained being from that date back. Each fascinating account in vivid detail; such as how Philadelphia's section called Northern Liberties, having been a British Barracks; and Logan Square being a cemetery; Bethlehem Pa. began in 1743 by Count Zinzendorf of Monrovia, considered a frontier town to which people from neighboring counties fled to, from fear of Indian attacks; when President Hancock first came to Philadelphia, as president of the first Congress, he wore a scarlet coat and cocked hat with a black cockade, etc. Bound in brown blind stamped cloth, gilt title, illustration and volume number to spines; each spine chipped to head and heel. Volume I closed tear and chip across lower quarter of spine, upper rear hinge starting. Volume II lower chip 1 inch, front hinge slightly shaky, mild soil to end papers.
