Hawkes, Francis L. The Monuments of Egypt; or, Egypt A Witness for the Bible New York, George P. Putman & Co., 1854, Hard Cover, Condition: Good Plus, Second Edition, with descriptive localities of the Nile. A study of Ancient Egypt and it's monuments in support of Biblical history; also revealing discoveries of early Egyptologists; Egyptian and Greek writers; examples of Egyptian writing' climate of the Nile and appearance of ruins (Temples, tombs, etc); art of design, etc. Also remarks on testimony - Application of them to the evidence afforded by the monuments - Facts realted in Abraham's history, tested by Egyptian remains: Joseph, The Bondage, The Deliverance, The Wanderings, and the direct monumental confirmation of Scriptural history. With 8 two color lithographs out of 12 (4 plates missing), and 30 textual woodcuts. Brown stamped cloth boards and spine, gilt illustration of Egyptian ruins & blind stamped same to rear board. Gilt title to spine, spine ends chipped, 1/4 chip to upper & lower hinge edge. Previous owner name stamp, very small to pastedown, different previous owner library plate to pastedown, soils to plate, f.e.p has one small tear, and closed tear mid page. Third previous owner name & address to f.f.e.p. in faded fountain ink. Pale damp stains to lower margin and upper corners in beginning of book. Text, illustrations clean, mild toning, few pages to middle of well are separated from hinge; however secure in book. Khayyam, Omar. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Presented By Willy Pogany London, George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., Full Leather, illus: Willy Pogany, Condition: Very Good, Rubaiyat with 16 full page color tipped in plates by Willy Pogany, with green border decorations. Each text page beautifully decorated and framed in green; facing pages to text also illustrated with ornate green designs. Bound in hand tooled leather, gilt border with floral decorations, and design in middle, gilt and floral design panels to spine, with gilt title. Rear board stamped with same design. Artist William Pogany,((b) Hungary in 1882, he came to American in 1915 via Paris) was an artist gifted in many styles. Well known for his ornate designs from the covers and end papers to the hand-calligraphed text to the pen & ink, pencil, wash, color and tipped-in color plates. He established himself as a premier illustrator of books; illustrating over one hundred. Hinges and all edges rubbed, small chips to spine ends near hinge, boards bright, clean and tight. Published circa 1925. Inscription dated May 1, 1927. End papers are parchment, edges darkened, all else very clean, tightly bound. Not paginated. Tall 8 vo, approx. 108 pp. In protective archival polyester wraps. Beautiful book for Rubaiyat collectors or gift.
