Spine has gilt lettering and same illustration of a woman, all spines have varying degrees of faded gilt (none are bright) and very mild sunning. Each volume has an interesting frontispiece, many from famous paintings. Title page decorated with orange frame and illustration of woman standing on the world. Few corners and spine ends mildly bumped. All clean no writing, clean bright text. Solidly bound, no hinge cracking. A scholarly work presented by different historians of various universities. 8 vo, each volume 300 to 400 pp. 1907-1908 to copyright page. Wonderful detailed drawings by Clare Dwiggins: "It is easy to have conscientious scruples when the are profitable'; "When we grow old we walk unfeelingly over that which we, in our youth, madly chased"; "The best and the worst in man respond only to woman's touch..unfortunately for man"; "When we care we usually don't dare; when we dare we don't often care". Clare Victor Dwiggins, American illustrator (1874-1959), born, Ohio; however, he worked mainly in Philadelphia and New York. He illustrated Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, for Mark Twain; The Christman Carol by Dickens, and other classics. He was the creator of the first half-page Sunday cartoon feature "School Days". Green cloth boards and spine, black title, illustration and stamped "Crankism". Title to spine. Mild rubbing of spine ends, and rear board. Very pale random foxing, most to title page, and marginal areas of about 10 pages. Printed on heavy weight paper. F.E.P. previous 1901 Christmas inscription. Below it inscription dated 1969. Few cracks to front hinge. All else solidly bound.
