This book gives a pictorial backround of the political events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, as well as little known but fascinating information - how long it took the news to spread; the village celebrations; reaction in Britain; a complete history of the document and it's journeys. Also distinctive 'sketches' of the Signers, presented as a group and by states, from John Hancock to Button Gwinnett, showing the kind of men who pledged their lives to this cause for freedom. More than 250 pictures from public and private collections, some from England, and many contemporary prints and paintings. Collected over a period of years. The National archives contributed a profusion of illustrative material, including a memorable photographic collection of homes of the signers. A sweet story of a young girl, in her village that starts her own zoo by caring for other people's animals during the summer vacation. When at the end of the vacation she at last had money to visit the real Zoo. Color illustrated e.p.'s of zoo animals, color title page. Each text page has a black and white head and tail piece; with the facing page a full color illustration, 27 full page illustrations. Front pastedown Christmas inscription to upper margin dated 1936. Red cloth boards and spine, with color paste down of Ameliaranne riding an elephant. Few pale discoloration spots to front board, black lettering to spine, spine ends rubbed. Rear board has few mild discoloration spots, damp stain to lower edge, 1/2 by 2 inches mild, not through to rear pastedown. On page has 2 inch closed tear to upper edge. All else very clean, text and illustrations bright and clear, solidly bound. In protective archival clear polyester wrap. not paginated, 54 pp, small 8 vo. Original published in Britian; this edition printed in Great Britian. n.d. indicated, seems to printed at the same time as George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. Edition, 1936. Very nice copy, mild wear.
